KakaoTalk, also known as KaTalk in South Korea, is a smartphone messaging app operated by Kakao Corporation. It is accessible via mobile and desktop platforms. KakaoTalk had 220 million registered users and 49 million monthly active users as of May 2017. It is available in 15 different languages. In South Korea, where it is the most widely used messaging app for smart phones and personal computers, 93% of smartphone owners use the app. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, it rose to prominence after being widely used as a tool to combat COVID-19 in collaboration with the South Korean government. While it was still possible to downgrade the app to a previous version in order to perform the ADB backup, this feature has been disabled as of Android 7.0 Nougat. As a result, there is currently no way for Android users to completely backup and transfer the application’s data without rooting the device.
